What’s the Difference Between Clay and Cement Tile Roofing?

Clay and cement tiles have been a popular roofing choice for homes and other kinds of structures. Both materials are beautiful and long-lasting when maintained properly. Many homeowners tend to think that the two kinds of tiles are the same.

Read on to learn the difference between clay and cement tile roofing from a roof inspection expert.

Clay Tile

Manufacturers make clay tiles by baking molded clay. They determine the density of the clay by the length of time and temperature at which it’s heated. Clay tiles come in a wide range of shades, such as white, yellow, orange and brown. The most popular color of clay tile roofing is terra-cotta but the tiles can be made into any color by spraying enamel before baking.

Clay tiles offer superior resistance to strong winds and it’s fire-resistant as well. Because of their shape, clay tiles will also protect your roof’s underlayment. It also creates an air pocket, which helps insulate and prevent unwanted heat or cold from reaching your attic.

Cement Tile

Cement tiles consist of sand, cement, and water, which are molded under heat and high pressure. The exterior surface of the tiles may be finished with a paint-like material. Many homeowners and roofing contractors prefer this material because it has additional water locks on the edge that prevent water penetration.

These tiles are available in three main profiles, which are flat, low and high. They can be made to look like traditional clay tiles, wood shakes, slate, and stone. Concrete tiles resist hail, wind, and fire, increasing the safety of your home.
