How Ventilation Problems Affect Your Health

When it comes to home improvement, most people are concerned with roof repairs or replacement or maybe getting new siding or windows. What many don’t realize is that what they should be focusing on is right in front of them.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, air quality inside homes is actually two to five times worse than conditions outside. Several factors can affect indoor air quality, including the activities you do inside your home and the products you use. Unfortunately, poor air quality doesn’t just affect your comfort. In fact, it poses bigger risks to your health.

Here are a couple of ventilation problems and how they affect you:

1. High Humidity Levels

A roof inspection can reveal the presence of molds but you’ll probably chalk it up to moisture exposure due to a leak. However, poor ventilation gives rises to high humidity levels, which can cause and exacerbate allergies and respiratory diseases by promoting the growth of mites, mold and mildew. Even when you are not particularly sensitive to particules in the air, exposure to these biological agents can still lead to eye, skin, nose, throat and lung irritations.

2. High Concentration of Volatile Organic Compounds

VOCs are emitted from numerous products in the home as organic chemicals are widely used as ingredients in a number of household items, such as cleansers and disinfectants. Waxes, varnishes and paints on furniture and various surfaces of the home can also emit these gases. Without ample ventilation, VOCs are not flushed out of the home, leading to health effects that may include: throat, nose and eye irritations; skin alleregies; headaches; nausea; dizziness; fatigue; loss of coordination; and liver, kidney and central nervous system damage.
