The roof is one of the most expensive parts of your home and its high price means it’s easy for most homeowners to skimp on professional help and perform their own installation. It’s cheaper this way, but you get cheaper work too, which often results in poor roof installation.
CQ Construction and Roofing, your local roofing contractors, list the four signs that your roof wasn’t properly installed.
1. Water Leaks and Stains
A roof that wasn’t properly installed develops leaks more easily and is generally more susceptible to water damage and premature rot. One way to check if there are leaks in your roof is black stains on the shingles and in the attic space.
Although isolated leaks can be addressed with roof repair, it’s not always the case if the leak is coming from numerous spots on the roof or if the damage is extensive. Premature shedding of roofing shingles, due to leaks, is a sign that the roof wasn’t properly installed in the first place.
2. Missing Shingles
A roof that was not properly installed will lose shingles earlier. This is due to the structural weakness of the roof as a result of poor installation. You’ll notice this after a storm or exceptionally strong winds; if you notice large parts of your roof are missing shingles, then you’ve got a problem. A total replacement and not a repair might be in order.
3. Mismatched Shingles
The roof, as a general rule, has a uniform appearance, be it in terms of color, shape, or shingle size. So if you notice there are shingles that are the wrong color or size, it’s a sign that the contractor that installed your roof cut corners on the shingles.
While it may seem like a simple cosmetic issue, mismatched shingles will wear down faster, which means your roof won’t be as durable and weather resilient as it’s supposed to be.
4. Missing Drip Edge
The dip edge is the sheet of metal that protects the board under the edge of your roof from water damage. It’s usually located between the underlayment and shingles and will supposedly extend over the gutter. Your roof was improperly installed if this part of the roof is missing.
Far from a cosmetic issue, a missing drip edge can be devastating to your home. Not only does it hasten rot damage and staining; there’s also the chance that your basement will flood during a storm and mold will proliferate in your home.
